Burger’s rugby career commenced at a young age, with his early promise evident during his tenure with the South African U21 team that clinched the U21 Rugby World Cup in 2002. His leadership qualities shone through as he captained the same side in 2003, the same year he made his debut for both the Western Province and the South African national team, the Springboks. ​

His comeback was crowned by being part of the Springboks squad that won the Rugby World Cup in France that year, reinforcing his status as a key player in international rugby.​

He played for the Stormers in Super Rugby, Suntory Sungoliath in Japan’s Top League, and later for Saracens in the English Premiership, contributing to their domestic and European successes.
