Dr Gillian Arendse is an accomplished South African science communicator, educator and keynote speaker known for his ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible, meaningful and inspiring to audiences of all ages. Born in Paarl, he completed a Ph.D in Experimental Nuclear Physics at Stellenbosch University, where he later served as a physics lecturer for a decade. His academic depth, combined with his natural talent for connecting with people, positioned him as a national leader in science advancement.

From 2008 to 2013, Dr Arendse managed the Community Interaction and Training Division at iThemba Labs, overseeing nationwide initiatives designed to promote science awareness among learners, educators and the general public. His work included developing communication strategies, delivering training, and driving programmes that strengthened South Africa’s science engagement ecosystem.

In 2014, he became Head of the Centre for Mentor, Tutor and Leadership Development at Stellenbosch University, where he continues to empower students through mentorship, academic support structures and leadership development frameworks.

Born in Paarl, Dr Gillian Arendse attended Nederburg Primary School and Paulus Joubert SS. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch from 1989 – 1996, with a Ph.D (Experimental Nuclear Physics).

From 1997 to 2007, he was the lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University Stellenbosch where he went on to become the Manager of the Community Interaction and Training Division at iThemba Labs from 2008 to 2013.

His portfolio at iThemba labs consisted of Science Advancement – overseeing the activities aimed at promoting awareness and appreciation of science amongst learners, teachers, students and the general public as well as Communication – developing material to create a brand awareness (both internally and externally).

In 2014, Dr Gillian Arendse became the Head of the Centre for Mentor, Tutor and Leadership Development at Stellenbosch University.
