Steven Kitshoff’s rugby journey began at Paul Roos Gymnasium, a school renowned for producing rugby talent. His early promise was evident as he represented the South Africa Under-20 team, clinching the IRB Junior World Championship in 2012. This victory marked the beginning of a career filled with accolades and significant contributions to the sport.
Kitshoff’s professional debut with the Stormers in 2011 showcased his exceptional skills as a loosehead prop. His tenure with the Stormers was marked by leadership and success, including captaining the team to their first United Rugby Championship (URC) title in 2022. His club career also included a stint with Bordeaux Bègles in France and a season with Ulster Rugby in Ireland, reflecting his adaptability and international appeal.
On the international stage, Kitshoff was integral to South Africa’s Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023. In 2019, he contributed off the bench in the final against England, and in 2023, he started in the final against New Zealand, showcasing his evolution into a key player for the Springboks. His international achievements also include winning the Rugby Championship in 2019 and 2023 and being part of the victorious British & Irish Lions series in 2021.
Kitshoff’s career was not without challenges. In 2024, he suffered a severe neck injury during a Currie Cup match, leading to his retirement in early 2025. The injury, which brought him within two millimeters of a catastrophic outcome, underscored the physical demands of professional rugby and highlighted Kitshoff’s resilience and determination. His decision to retire prioritized his health and family, demonstrating his wisdom and foresight.
