Personal Branding -How to NOT look like your problems | Tinoda Moyo | TEDxBorrowdaleWomen

A 12 minute TEDx talk that reframes personal branding as consistent, strengths-led clarity, with simple steps to show value without letting setbacks define you.

Tinoda opens with a playful dating scenario to illustrate an immediate branding truth: people recoil from negativity. If a first impression is dominated by complaints, the relationship rarely progresses. The same applies to your professional presence. Problems are universal, but letting them dominate how you show up makes others associate you with heavy feelings rather than solutions. Personal branding, she argues, is the continuous way you present yourself, online and in person, and how you relate to others.

She emphasizes why your brand matters. It supports legacy, expands access for those who can learn from your experience, and counters the web’s long memory with a better story told by you. Personal branding is not flaunting lifestyle details. It is curating expertise, sharing accomplishments, and making clear what sets you apart so a buyer or employer can choose you with confidence. She challenges viewers to Google themselves and assess whether outdated images and posts still define them.

The how-to section is practical. First, focus on strengths and record them. Use a brag book to capture wins, awards, and recognitions as they happen to fuel confidence and provide credible proof. Do not confuse humility with hiding your value. Second, be authentic. Pretending to be someone else deprives the world of your unique contribution. Third, be supportive and consistent so your offline behavior matches your online promise. Fourth, never give up. Treat setbacks as lessons and keep improving.

Tinoda closes with mindset. You tend to attract what you habitually project. If you ruminate on problems, your actions and outcomes follow that path. If you associate your brand with learning, contribution, and achievement, you prime opportunities to find you. Her final definition anchors the talk: your personal brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room. Shape that message deliberately.
