After having successfully proved her talent, Zonke qualifies to be called a professional artist. Her name is nothing unknown in the music scene; she has breathed life into many songs over the years on albums by the likes of Thebe, the late TK, Loyiso, Skizo and Mafikizolo.
She has on top of that contributed to the potentially massive hit, ‘All in the way’ with the international house music guru, Frank Roger. With these achievements, one can easily say that Zonke is overloaded with an amazing talent complimented by endless experiences.
After Zonke completed matric, she became sure that music was her first love and vowed not to compromise on her ambition. She went to Bloemfontein and attempted to study Human Resource Management, which she never completed due to her overwhelming love for music distracting her studies.
After this she went to Johannesburg. With the help of her father and stepmom, she met prominent names in the music industry on various occasions. It was at this stage that she got introduced to artists such as Joe Nina and Wendy Mseleku, who she later worked with as a backing vocalist on various occasions.
Something that sets her apart from other artists is that her style of music has been predominantly laid back, on a soulful live vibe, with the feel of the well known acid jazz innovators; Incognito.
Zonke was then introduced to Erasmus Leon, a meeting which lead her to eventually get connected with Jazzkantine from Germany. Together with the German band, she helped conceive the song ‘Africa, my mother land’.
The group consisted of Zonke and two friends from the Eastern Cape. Culture Clan toured around the world and even went to scoop a Metro FM Award for the R&B song in 2004 as well as the Channel O – Best Video Award in 2005.
Talking about some of the things she learned while performing overseas, she commented “Where I performed, there is one thing I realised, if there is a gig, whether the artist is known or not, people will come out in a large number whereas here in SA its the other way around.
Locally, for people to attend your gig, you firstly need to be known.”
Talking about her project titled, ‘Life, Love ‘n Music’, she said whatever she works on has her signature. “What I bring on the table is new and exclusively mine. For me to go and seek a recording deal, I need to be sure of my talent and my creativity, which I am certain that I have.”
