Talent Short Bio

The African Youth Ensemble is a children’s orchestra founded in 2000 by violin teacher Kolwane Mantu, who began teaching violin in Soweto more than two decades ago. The ensemble is made up of young children who have been trained to play the violin, many of whom were introduced to classical music through this pioneering community initiative.

The orchestra’s early development was supported by donated instruments from Peace Boat, an international educational and networking organization from Japan known for facilitating cultural exchange programs across the globe. These contributions enabled young musicians in Soweto to access high-quality instruments and participate in meaningful artistic development.

Over the years, the African Youth Ensemble has performed at significant national and international events. Highlights include appearances at Youth Day celebrations in Soweto, performances for Nelson Mandela during the launch of the Nelson Mandela Scholarship Alumni Programme, and collaborative performances with the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands. The ensemble has also performed for corporate and institutional audiences, including Portnet and multi-night engagements at Vista University in Soweto for visiting African American professors.
