If you haven’t heard of Breakfast Included – Jazz Band, you soon will.  Their tongue-in-cheek name belies the caliber of Jazz they play, and this quartet has its sights firmly set on the top.

The band was formed just over two years ago, in the under-ventilated dungeons of UCT’s College of Music’s A-level; and from small beginnings at their first Café Camissa gig, these four UCT music students have become a force to be reckoned with.

Always striving for a high level of professionalism often seen lacking in the Jazz world, they have appeared live over 350 times since their debut at the ’99 UCT Jazz Festival.

This high play-rate, combined with their study schedule, has resulted in Breakfast Included becoming an experienced professional band in a very short space of time.

Don’t let their young age fool you – as a headline article in Argus reads:  BREAKFAST’S NO BOY BAND!

Although they look like one; with an average age of just 21 – in an idiom almost solely dominated by established, older musicians, they won the coveted title of Best Band in the Western Cape (two years running ’00 & ’01) in the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters program, and have performed at the Davidoff International Vocal Jazz Festival with vocalist, Nonthutuzelo Puoane; an honour and show of confidence in the band’s abilities – (two of their members were then only 19 years of age.)

Breakfast Included | Jazz Band

Breakfast Included has also played many other high profile gigs, sharing the stage with British band, Shakatak, opening for the Soweto String Quartet at a packed Appletiser Kirstenbosch Sundowner Concert, then the following year performing as the headline act.

Things were going so well at the end of 2000, the band went into the SABC Beach Road studios in January, and recorded a 10-track CD, and were lucky enough to acquire the services of Gavin Minter (production) and Richard Mitchell (engineering) who has worked with numerous artists (Dollar Brand, Moses Taiwa Mololekwa).

The CD has subsequently been released through South

Africa, Europe and has recently been released on an International Compilation by the Passion Jazz record label.Launched at a packed-to-the-rafters Green Dolphin, the self-titled album is received extensive airplay on both P4 and Fine Music Radio.

Breakfast Included-Conference Jazz Band
Breakfast Included are: David Poole (saxophones), Jason Gien-Reolon (piano), Dominic Peters (acoustic Bass) and Shaun Michau (drums).

Helen Nicholson has a BCom degree from Wits University where she studied to be an accountant.

After working in the financial industry in South Africa, Helen lived in the Middle East for 5 years where she developed and sold her own successful business in Dubai before returning to South Africa.

She gained international corporate experience in the IT industry, coordinating the marketing Middle East operation for Novell.

On her return to South Africa, Helen Nicholson consulted and lectured at Wits Business School where she still guest lectures on the MBA programme and on various in-company programs. She also lectures at GIBS and the UCT Graduate School of Business.

Helen has a bi-monthly regular column in the Star Newspaper on the power of networking. She is the Director of The Networking Company, specialising in educating people to ‘Grow your Network, Grow your Business’.

Helen Nicholson recently published the business best-seller, ‘Networking – How to get Your Black Belt in Business Success’.

Helen Nicholson | Business Networking

Helen Nicholson is a passionate South African who thrives on the meaningful work she does as a consultant in the area of ‘leadership development’.

Helen is a mentor at Shanduka Black Umbrellas for aspiring African entrepreneurs and she is a founding member of the Professional Speakers Association of South Africa.

She currently offers two presentations; ‘Mindfulness – a Business Game-Changer’ and ‘Grow Your Network, Grow Your Business’:

The ‘Grow Your Network, Grow Your Business ‘presentation will enable you to:

  • Realise the importance of developing your own personal brand.
  • Access the power of LinkedIn as a business development tool.
  • Determine how to identify the power brokers in networks i.e. connectors and mavens, and how to leverage those relationships.

Linkedin Course

The Beginner/Intermediate module is a stand-alone course. There is a 10% discount if you attend all three modules.

The Opposite to Advertising
Basically, content marketing is the art of communicating with your customers and prospects without selling. It is non-interruption marketing. Instead of pitching your products or services, you are delivering information that makes your buyer more intelligent.

The essence of this content strategy is the belief that if we, as businesses, deliver consistent, ongoing valuable information to buyers, they ultimately reward us with their business and loyalty. According to Roper Public Affairs,
•    80 percent of business decision makers prefer to get company information in a series of articles versus an advertisement.
•    70 percent say content marketing makes them feel closer to the sponsoring company, while
•    60 percent say that company content helps them make better product decisions.

Think of this – what if your customers looked forward to receiving your marketing? What if when they received it, via print, email, website, they spent 15, 30, 45 minutes with it?

Why LinkedIn?

Other than Facebook and Twitter, LinkedIn is strictly business – and has become a “secret weapon for B2B activities” for Helen Nicholson and such as:
1.   Replacing Cold Calling
2.   Generating New Leads
3.   Finding the Decision Maker
