In this panel discussion, Nick Mallett draws on his extensive coaching experience to highlight the foundations of effective leadership. He emphasizes that trust is the cornerstone of any successful team, whether in sports or business. Trust must extend beyond players to include assistant coaches, medical staff, media teams, and the broader support network.
Mallett explains that leaders must be competent and clear in their knowledge, as confidence stems from authority. Communication is equally crucial—not only addressing groups but connecting with individuals on a personal level. He shares how asking about players’ families or personal lives deepened connections and built loyalty, particularly during his coaching stints in Italy and France.
Consistency of behavior is another pillar of trust. Leaders who fluctuate wildly between praise and criticism risk losing respect, whereas a steady and fair approach fosters stability. Mallett reflects on mistakes, such as dropping a respected captain, which eroded trust and weakened team performance.
Ultimately, he stresses that competence, communication, connection, and consistency together create confidence, which drives success. These insights, while rooted in rugby, offer transferable lessons for corporate teams, leadership development, and organizational culture.

Nick Mallett delivers an engaging and unfiltered talk on what it takes to build winning teams and sustain performance across very different rugby cultures. Drawing on his time coaching South Africa, Stade Français in Paris, and the Italian national team, he underscores that leadership success comes down to teamwork, integrity, and respect.
He begins with the Springboks in the late 1990s, where the challenge was overcoming deep provincial rivalries. Mallett shifted away from an authoritarian style, creating mixed groups of players and empowering them to take responsibility for discipline, training, and team culture. He illustrates how early incidents of player misconduct tested his philosophy but ultimately reinforced team accountability.
He then shares the story of Stade Français, where a star player and captain, Fabien Galthié, struggled with ego and criticism. By benching him, Mallett forced a shift in perspective from individual ambition to team-first behavior. This transformation not only helped Stade Français win titles but also shaped Galthié into a respected future coach.
Turning to Italy, Mallett describes the stark challenge of coaching a developing rugby nation. He set realistic goals—such as limiting points conceded rather than expecting wins—and built pride through defensive resilience and unity. A mix of humor, including a story of a player motivated by a secret betting slip, highlights both the struggles and triumphs of instilling belief in underdog teams.
Throughout, Mallett emphasizes integrity, honesty, and fairness. He recalls pivotal acts of selflessness from players like Jannie de Beer and Henry Honiball, who each sacrificed personal ambition for the team’s greater good. These moments, he argues, reveal the essence of true leadership and lasting culture: unselfishness, shared respect, and the ability to inspire individuals to play for something larger than themselves.
